Each year at the holiday season I try to share gift ideas. This year was difficult as usual for grandparents as we really don’t want anyone to spend money on us. For several years, I’ve suggested gifts of time in various ways and for various reasons.

This year I have intentionally waited for the day before Christmas to post this blog. Hopefully, your family is together sometime during the holiday and New Year season to accomplish the goal of memorializing the family elders in video. With iPhones it cannot be easier. . . .

And there are several reasons why:

MEMORIALIZE FINANCES AND ACCOUNTS

Reading the Wall Street Journal, Thursday, November 6, 2025, “Amid Grief, A Struggle to Grasp Finances,” by Veronica Dagher, I had one of those aha moments. The widow, in the article said, “she wishes she and Sasha had recorded a video of him, outlining their accounts and the rationale behind each investment.” Not only record what exists, but where it exists and how to locate it before the loved one who is the financial partner dies.

MEMORIALIZE FAMILY HISTORY

Then, I read that adult children and grandchildren regret never videotaping the elders in the family who can give ancestry history. Those who know the family history on both sides of each family leave us sooner than we anticipate.

MEMORIALIZE THE LIFE OF GRANDPARENTS AND PARENTS

My father used to say a rye bread was a nickel at the bakery in America when he arrived and he thought that was expensive. I just paid $4.85 for a rye bread at the bakery at Publix, and I thought that was expensive. Life in different generations can change and some things never change. Record the life of parents and grandparents at this point in time.

MEMORIALIZE RITUALS AND TRADITIONS UNIQUE TO YOUR FAMILY

Each family has its own rituals and traditions. Memorialize them this holiday season and every holiday season. The years fly and the days are long. A saying that I heard from my parents and now I know how true those words are.

The most fortunate thing about technology is that it allows us to quickly and easily record videos.

REPEAT

Think of making this an annual holiday tradition and designate one responsible family member to be the record keeper and to disseminate the videos to the whole family.

HAVE A HAPPY AND HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON with

Joy,

Mema
