Kylie Kelce, the wife of Jason Kelce, and new sister-in-law of Taylor Swift, has what she calls the ultimate postpartum gift guide for baby showers, which I love.
Yes, I am a grandmother of six where the youngest is eight years old. No matter, I watched Kylie Kelce’s podcast on Facebook on the best postpartum gift guide for baby showers for Moms to be. I am a real Kylie Kelcie fan. I never thought I would be, but she truly tells everything like it is and doesn’t pull any punches. She is truly adorable and the mother of little four girls with a football player, husband. Kyle Kelce has to be somebody to watch.
Yes, I am adding her list for those mothers and mothers-in-law of mothers to be today and grandmothers of mothers to be, but let’s face it, the best gift that we grandparents can afford to give, is time and help. Here is a link to her podcast, “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce.”
I have attached some of my previous blog posts with gift guides and those that I think contain the best advice for grandparents to be. Of course, I think all of the posts are worth looking at. See below.
Here is some of the advice I gave.
A gift of a baby nurse for the newborn for the first week the newborn is home is a gift you will be thanked for forever. If a baby nurse is not affordable, a night nurse is the next best option. You may ask why you need a night nurse if you are breast-feeding. Those of us with a newborn know that any feeding takes a whole hour by the time you changed the baby, feed the baby, get the baby ready to go back to sleep, and get the baby to bed again. The night nurse gets the baby ready to be breast-feed, takes the baby immediately after breast-feeding and the mother can go right back to sleep. A gift of sleep for new parents is the best gift. The second gift is that the baby nurse gets the newborn on a schedule, and many newborns sleep at least a five hour stretch before the nurse leaves. The third gift is that a newborn seems fragile, and the baby nurse teaches the parents how to bathe and care for the newborn. All this makes for a happy home for the newborn.
If you can’t afford a baby nurse, then consider becoming one. Whatever you can stand by doing, night duty, morning duty, evening duty. Then get out of the way and out of the house. Unless, you asked to stay. Unless they allow you to do laundry and sterilize everything, which I think they will.
Some of my favorite new grandmother memories are rocking the newborn grandchild in the middle of the night watching House Hunter and International House Hunter repeats.
So, here is this grandma’s favorite tip: Future grandmother and grandfather should give the pregnant mother TWO inexpensive washed (in baby detergent) large t-shirts to wear before the baby is born and while still in the hospital or as soon as the new mother arrives home. The grandparents wear the t-shirt when holding the baby. Why? Newborns sense of smell is the strongest sense at birth. They know their mother’s smell so if you smell like their mother when you are holding them, they will be calmer and happier. Always tell the new father-to-be to do the same. We grandparents want our grandchildren to be the happiest!
To me, being a grandmother is the best part of life.
Here’s Kylie Kelsey‘s ultimate postpartum gift guide for baby shower. It would be fun to get a giant basket. Fill it with all of these for a baby shower. Wrap it with stickers that say “Shhh” all over it.
Always Discreet disposable underwear offer comfortable, high-coverage options
Tucks Medicated Pads: Witch hazel cooling pads to soothe tender areas
Dermoplast Postpartum Pain Relief Spray: A no-touch aerosol with benzocaine and menthol for fast, cooling pain relief
Ducolax: stool softener, overnight laxative
A 5 pack of onsies cheapest 0-3 months. Cheap. When newborn has a blowout, just throw in trash
Puppy pads for newborn blowouts
Infant Tylenol
Mylicon Gas drops
Baby thermometer
Baby nail trimmer
Snacks for the mom, her favorite
Adult beverage or non alcoholic version
Desitin butt paste, wipe on thick
Nipple cream
Pacifiers. As many 5 options: from my own experience, too, different babies like different shapes. Keep trying. (However, I add my own grandmother advice—take it away when baby is three months old. That is the sweet spot, easiest time to take it away, so you do not see your toddler or preschooler with a pacifier)
Hand sanitizer, many bottles, everywhere in the house, and for guests
Hand soap for guests (and paper disposable hand towels, from me)
Kylie Kelce’s postpartum gift guide focuses on practical, soothing essentials for new mothers. She strongly advocates for easing postpartum recovery with items you may not have thought of.
I wish I had had some of these items when I was a new mom in the dark ages. Add your own ideas to the gift guides with
Joy,
Mema
